3. Journey to the End of the Earth
Author: Tishani Doshi Main Short-answer Type Qs.
Q1.How did the author feel when she
first set foot on the Antarctic continent?
Or
How did the Antarctic amaze the writer
when she first saw it? 2010 Or
What were the writer’s feelings on reaching Antarctica?
2011
Ans. The author was surprised and happy
also to put her foot in Antarctica. The whole landscape was very large and
spread under the blue sky. It was white ice everywhere and loneliness. No noise
at all.
Q2.Why is a visit to Antarctica
important to realise the effect of global warming? 2008
Ans. We can see the dangerous impact of global warming there. Glaciers are melting down. The solid ice is becoming
water there. That water is increasing the sea level. One day it may cause
floods on the earth.
Q3.How can a visit to Antarctica be
an enlightening experience? 2008
Ans. The worst type of effect of global
warming is visible in Antarctica. We get first-hand knowledge there. We see the glaciers melting down there. So the
visit is an enlightening experience.
Q5.What sort of brightness and
silence prevailed upon Antarctica during summer? 2011
Ans. Antarctica has a large spread of
white ice. There are big glaciers there. But brightness and deep silence
prevail there. In summer the sun shines for twenty-four hours in Antarctica.
Q6.What was the objective of the
‘Students on Ice’ program? 2009
Ans. The objective was to make the
students aware of the dangers of global warming on the earth. The future of the
planet earth depended on the changes in Antarctica. They received first-hand knowledge about global warming and its dangerous impact on the earth.
Ans. The students became aware of the coming dangers on
the earth. They saw from their own eyes that the glaciers were melting fast
because of air pollution on the earth. It is also causing climatic changes on
the earth.
Q8.What are the future indications
for mankind? 2009
Ans. The future indications for mankind
are clear and alarming. If global warming continues, all the islands and
coastal areas will be underwater one day. The slow change in the climate of the
earth will pose danger to the life of living beings.
Q9.Why is Antarctica and its
understanding important for the survival of the world?
2009
Ans. Antarctica and its understanding are
very much important for us. The future of our planet earth is in great danger.
If global warming continues, all the islands and coastal areas will be underwater one day.
Q10.How do geological phenomena help
us to know about the history of humankind?
Ans. It helps us to know that in past some
dangerous changes took place and the continent of Antarctica was separated. It
can be studied how other continents took place. The melting of the polar caps
tells our future on the earth.
Q11.In a short span of twelve
thousand years, man has managed to create a ruckus (disturbance) on the earth.
How? (Sample
Paper)
Ans. Man has created so many problems for the survival of
all the creatures including himself on the earth. He has disturbed the
ecosystem. Forests are being cut recklessly. Even mountains are being
disturbed by making roads, buildings and digging tunnels in them. Minerals are
being dug out of the earth. The population is increasing more than the limit. The environment is being polluted. Thus man has really created ruckus on the
surface of the earth. (Notes made by Shish Pal Chauhan)
Q12. What information does
the author give about Gondwana?
Ans. Gondwana refers to present-day Antarctica. It was a
supercontinent in the South Six hundred and fifty million years ago. Humans
were not there. There was a huge variety of flora and fauna and the climate was
warm then.
Q13. How long was Tishani
Doshi’s journey to Antarctica?
Ans. It was a long journey. She had to travel for 100 hours
in car, airplane, and ship. She crossed nine time zones, six checkpoints,
three bodies of water, and at least three ecospheres.
Q14. How were the Himalyas
formed?
Ans. We come to know that a million of years ago, India was a
part of the supercontinent, Gondwana. There occurred changes inside the earth.
Some part of this great continent was pushed northwards. The pressure against
Asia created the Himalayas.
Q15. Which present countries
were there is Gondwana?
Ans. These were present-day South America,
Africa, Arabia, Madagascar (a huge island nation off the southeast
coast of Africa), India, Australia, and Antarctica.
Long Answer-type Qs. (100-120 words)
In a short span of twelve thousand years, man
has managed to create a ruckus (disturbance) on the earth. How? (Sample Paper)
Ans. Man has really created a ruckus on
the earth during this short span of just twelve thousand years. The earth has
not remained a proper place to live. Pollution of all types has been created
by human activities. The temperature on the earth is rising up day by day. The
people who visit the mountains covered with ice leave garbage there. It further
increases the temperature there. It leads to the melting down of big glaciers on
the Earth. Global warming has posed dangers to the whole creation. Thus Antarctica
and its understanding is very much important for us. We can see the dangerous
impact of global warming there from our own eyes. Glaciers are melting
down. The solid ice is becoming water there.
Q2.How is Antarctica a crucial
element in the debate on climate change?
2008
Ans. There is no doubt that Antarctica is
an important issue for debate. If right efforts have not been done on time, the
present shape of our globe will be changed. It will create so many dangers for
the survival of the living beings on the earth. Global warming is spreading
everywhere in the world. Glaciers are melting down on Antarctica every
time. Water in the seas is increasing every moment. There will be floods on the
earth if it continues in the future. Many coastal cities will be drowned underwater. Global warming will hit not only human beings but the other
creatures and vegetation also. Climate is also changing due to it.
