(Source: S. Chauhan Institute of English, Jagadhri-YNR)
Author: Tishani Doshi Main Short-answer Type Qs.
Q1.How did the author feel when she
first set foot on Antarctic continent?
Or
How did Antarctic amaze the writer
when she first saw it? 2010 Or What
were the writer’s feelings on reaching Antarctica?
2011
Ans. The author was surprised and happy
also to put her foot at the Antarctica. It was because the whole landscape was
very large and spread under the blue sky. It was white ice everywhere and
loneliness. No noise at all. Once India and Antarctica were united together and
were the same part of a landmass. It was also surprising for her.
Q2.Why is a
visit to Antarctica important to realise the effect of global warming? 2008
Ans. If we go to Antarctica, we can see
the dangerous impact of the global warming there from our own eyes. Glaciers
are melting down. The solid ice is becoming water there. That water is
increasing the sea level. One day it may cause floods on the earth.
Q3.How can a visit to Antarctica be
an enlightening experience? 2008
Ans. The visit to Antarctica is really an
enlightening experience. We come to know that the changes which are taking
place there will have deep effect on the other parts of the earth. Once India
and Antarctica were united and they were one piece of land. We can see the
effect of global warming there and can do something to stop it.
Q4.How is Antarctica a crucial
element in the debate on climate change?
2008
Ans. There is no doubt that Antarctica is
an important issue for debate. If right efforts have not been done on time, the
present shape of our globe will be changed. It will create so many dangers for
the survival of us. There will be floods on the earth. Many coastal cities will
be downed under water. Global warming will hit not only the human beings, but
the other creatures and vegetation also. Climate is also changing due to it.
Q5.What sort of brightness and
silence prevailed upon Antarctica during summer? 2011
Ans. Antarctica has a large spread of
white ice. There are big glaciers there. But a brightness and deep silence
prevails there. There are no human beings and other creatures except white
bears living at Antarctica. Sometimes the sound coming from breaking of an
iceberg and avalanche is heard there. In summer the sun shines for twenty four
hours at Antarctica.
Q6.What was the objective of the
‘Students on Ice’ programme? 2009
Ans. The objective was clear and very
great indeed. The visit was enlightening for them. They could come to know how
the future of the planet earth depended on the changes at Antarctica. Thus they
received the first hand knowledge about global warming and its dangerous impact
on the earth. They are the future policy makers and would surely do something
useful to save the planet earth.
Q7.What do
you think is the reason behind the success of the programme ‘Students on Ice’? 2011 (Notes made by Shish Pal Chauhan)
Ans. The reason for the success of the programme
‘Students on Ice’ was that they became aware of the coming dangers on the
earth. They saw from their own eyes that the glaciers were melting fast because
of air pollution on the earth. It is also causing climatic changes on the
earth. It was a firsthand knowledge received by the students there.
Q8.What are the future indications
for mankind? 2009
Ans. The future indications for mankind
are clear and alarming. If global warming continues, all the islands and
coastal areas will be under water one day. The slow change in climate of the
earth will pose danger to the life of living beings. It will affect all on the
earth. Life on the earth may become a matter of the past.
Q9.Why is Antarctica and its
understanding important for the survival of the world?
2009
Ans. Antarctica and its understanding is
very much important for us. The future of our planet earth is in great danger.

water one day. The slow change in climate of the earth will pose danger to the
life of living beings. It will affect all on the earth. Life on the earth may
become a matter of the past.
Q10.How do geological phenomena help
us to know about the history of humankind? 2009 Ans. It helps us to know that in
past some dangerous changes took place and the continent of Antarctica was
separated. It can be studied how other continents took place. The melting of
the polar caps tells our future on the earth.
Q11.In a short span of twelve
thousand years man has managed to create a ruckus (disturbance) on the earth.
How? (Sample Paper)
Ans. Man has created so many problems for the survival of
all the creatures including himself on the earth. He has disturbed the
eco-system. Forests are being cut recklessly. Even mountains are being
disturbed by making roads, buildings and digging tunnels in them. Minerals are
being dug out of the earth. Population is increasing more than the limit.
Environment is being polluted. Thus man has really created ruckus on the
surface of the earth. (Notes made by Shish Pal Chauhan)
